Who is This?
Keeper Trebilcock in the early 1970s |
Wood Island Lighthouse Keeper Cliff Trebilcock and Linda Doughty plan to be married at the lighthouse this Fall. Linda, a Maine native from Falmouth, has had a life long love of lighthouses. In fact this is what brought she and Cliff together. Linda says she would live in a lighthouse the rest of her life if there was one available. Certainly being married at Wood Island Lighthouse will be perfect for this couple. Cliff, who is retired Coast Guard was the keeper at Wood Island Light in the early 1970s. He has continued to be part of the effort to save and restore the lighthouse. He has come on tours and thrilled the visitors - meeting a keeper is a rare experience, and he has made the trip down from his home in Bath to participate in meetings, work days, fundraisers, parades as well as to help with photography for various projects. FOWIL wishes the best for Linda and Cliff and hope that Mother Nature is mellow on the day of the wedding. Congratulations! |

Dragged Anchor..... Schooner Idaho wrecked at the Pool on December 28th, 1894. The ship under Captain C.F. Clark, bound from Boston to Boothbay, ran in between the Pool and Wood Island to lay out of the storm. There was a very heavy sea running and in the gale she dragged her anchor and went ashore about 3/4 of a mile north of the Life Saving Station. The Life saving crew went to the rescue and the crew of the schooner was taken off without difficulty, though they would not have stood much chance of getting off in their own boats. There was no hope of saving the schooner. She was loaded with blue manure and her cargo was insured. She was owned by James Mucrchie & Sons of Calais. Biddeford Daily Journal |
A terrific opportunity for an overnight stay at an island lighthouse! Goat Island Lighthouse, off the coast of Cape Porpoise, Maine, is under the care of the Kennebunk Conservation Trust and in the true lighthouse spirit of rescuing those in need, is holding a fundraiser to do just that. The Mustang Rescue League, which rescues horses will benefit from KCT's fundraiser, which offers a two night stay at Goat Island Lighthouse, including a lobster dinner, a tour of the harbor and island with the lighthouse caretakers and a boat ride to the mainland and back for shopping and site seeing. This lighthouse is not open to the public, so this is a special opportunity. Win this trip by purchasing a raffle ticket for $100. THE DRAWING IS MAY 1ST. The winner may make reservations for their stay anytime between June and September, 2007. FOWIL is pleased to be able to let our newsletter readers know about this event. To get a raffle ticket call 207-284-7721 Find out further information here at the Mustang Rescue Raffle link. |

The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse have seven people serving on the executive committee. Diane Noble is one of our committee members who is in charge of our Public Relations. We are most happy that she has had time, before our busy summer season, to work hard in her art studio. She is now presenting a beautiful show of her paintings at the Dyer Library in Saco. You can enjoy her work there until April 30th. |
