Wood Island Lighthouse Tours - July and August 2012
A
tour to Wood Island Lighthouse is run by the Friends of
Wood Island Lighthouse, an all volunteer, 501(c)(3)
nonprofit. The lighthouse is located off the coast of
Biddeford Maine and tours leave from Vine's Landing in
Biddeford Pool. The guided tour takes about 1 1/2 hours and
is subject to Mother Nature and her weather and sea
conditions.
When are
the tours?
The tours are held in July
and August. The days and hours of the tours are listed
below.
Wednesday:
10 a.m. & 11 a.m.
Thursday:
5 p.m. & 6 p.m.
Saturday:
10 a.m. & 11 a.m.
Is the
tower open on the tours?
Yes, the tower is open to
those who wish to make the climb to the top. The tower
received a set of double handrails in 2008, making the
journey to the top safe for lighthouse guests. Those who
wish to access the tower, must read and follow the Tower Rules.
How do I
get on a tour?
Advanced reservations are required for all of
our lighthouse tours. Reservations may be made online
through this website or by phone.
Online Reservations (click
here)
Online
reservations may only be made during the week
prior to the tour date. Tour
dates will be displayed on the reservation calendar when
the date is open for online reservations. Tours fill up
fast, so we encourage you to take advantage of the
online reservation system. Online reservations will
begin on the week of June 18th.
Phone reservations (207-200-4552)
Reservations by phone are only made for the
current week's tour. The reservation phone line is open
Monday - Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
We will start taking phone reservations on June 26th.
What is
the price of the boat ride and tour?
There is no fixed charge for the boat-ride and
tour. However, donations are encouraged (suggested minimum
$15/person and $8 for children under 13) and gratefully
accepted, all donations going to the cost of running the
boat and the ultimate mission of restoring Wood Island
Lighthouse. This is a long term and costly endeavor that is
most worthwhile, as we are confident you will agree,
especially after you experience Wood Island Lighthouse in
person by means of a FOWIL tour.
May my
group schedule a special tour?
Based on volunteer availability, we are
occasional able to provide groups with special tours to the
island in July and August. In the past this has included
senior groups, community groups, or family trips. During
the busy summer months, we may add additional tours on
scheduled tour days if there is a demand and FOWIL
volunteers available.
